Database Exercise 1 - Establish Database Requirements

  1. First Draft of Systems Analysis for Prototype - use your Job Opportunity Summary from Career Exercise 2 to establish the information requirements for a prototype database for that Job Opportunity.
    1. To do this, right click this link and use the SaveTargetAs option to download my MS Word document, Db1SysAnalysis1.doc (32KB). Save this file on your H: drive here at SJU or on your hard drive at home.

    2. In Section I of Db1SysAnalysis1.doc, copy and paste from your Job Opportunity Summary of Career Exercise 2 sufficient information about your job opportunity in order to establish the information requirements for your prototype database.  Notice how I copied only one responsibility.  However, this is sufficient to specify the resulting database.

    3. In Section II, specify the desired reports.
      1. Full Transaction File Report - a report of all the contents of your Transaction File.  You just specify the data items (fields) to be included in the report and how it is sorted.

      2. Full Personnel File Report - a report of the five associates working for you sorted by associate ID.  It is appropriate to have just the first name, last name, and years of experience of each associate.

  2. Second Draft of Systems Analysis for Prototype - use your First Draft of Systems Analysis for Prototype to further clarify the information requirements for your prototype.

    1. To do this, right click this link and use the SaveTargetAs option to download my MS Word document, Db1SysAnalysis2.doc (36KB). Save this file on your H: drive here at SJU or on your hard drive at home.

    2. For Sections I, II.A, and B, incorporate any comments from the First Draft of Systems Analysis.

    3. For Section II.C, specify a meaningful exception criteria that would be helpful to you in your future job.  Have at least three different data items (fields).  Have exception criteria of the form:
                (Condition1 and Condition2) or
                (Condition3 and Condition4).

    4. For Section III,  specify the required files needed to create the above reports.
