Application of Operations Management Presentation

  1. Case Situation
Choose a realistic future work situation that you may have within the next five years.  Envision yourself and your partner giving a short presentation describing how you would apply one of the following topics to improve operations.

  2. Topics
    1. Moment-of-Truth (Ch 5, III.D) - use Microsoft Word to explicitly develop the script that specifies the first 2 or 3 minutes of interaction between the service provider and the customer.
    2. Control Charts (Ch 6 Supp, IV) - modify the Excel homework worksheet to develop control charts for one variable related to a service (not a physical good) that you may produce.
    3. Service Process Selection (Ch 7, V) - select a process for a new or revised service, use Factor Rating Method with at least three alternatives and at least four factors.  See the note for Factor Rating Method below.  For the three alternatives, it may be (???) appropriate to choose:
      1. Original process,
      2. Original process augmented with a passive website allowing customers to receive information,
      3. Original process augmented with an active website allowing customers to receive and send information.
    4. Layout Selection (Ch 9, II, III, IV, V, or VI) - select a layout from at least three layouts (with floor plans documented by Excel worksheets) and at least four factors (one factor will be either Process-oriented Layout Technique (II.D) or Product-oriented Layout Technique (VI.D)), using Factor Rating Method.  See the note for Factor Rating Method below.
    5. Time Studies (Ch 10, V.A) - develop a Time Standard for product pricing, staffing, or wage-incentive plans.  Create Excel worksheet containing data showing how your time standard was determined.
    6. ABC Analysis (Ch 12, V) - ABC Analysis applied to inventory systems, clients, . . . Class A has tight control, such as the EOQ model. . . .  Create Excel workbook showing your ABC Analysis, similar to Example 1 on Heizer, page 486.
    7. Transportation Method of Linear Programming (Ch 13, III) - develop an aggregate plan for a service.  Modify the homework Excel worksheet for your case.
    8. Material Requirements Planning (Ch 14, I.C) - MRP for goods, CRP for services.  Develop the basic input files.
    9. Johnson's Rule (Ch 15, II.B) - develop a schedule for a service.  Create Excel worksheet showing your input data and resulting schedule.
    10. Basic CPM (Ch 3, II) - develop the critical path for a project applied to auditing, software development, . . .  Have at least 10 activities, with no more than 50% of the tasks as critical tasks.  Create Excel worksheet showing your CPM analysis.  The Improvement in Operations may be based on revising some initial task time in order to reduce a costly overrun.
    11. Waiting Lines Applied to Breakdown Maintenance or (Retail) Customer Service (Ch 17, III or IV) - For either topic, create Excel worksheet showing your analysis.

  3. Requirements
    1. Step 1
      1. Right Click this link and use the SaveTargetAs option to download my PowerPoint presentation, AppOMPre.ppt (89KB).  Save this file on your H: drive or on your PC hard drive.
      2. Rename the file AP<your last name>.ppt. For example, if your name is Patrick Berra, then the file name would be APberra.ppt.
      3. Read the two Partial Samples below for ideas.
      4. Modify, with your partner, Slides 1-4.
      5. Be prepared for informal discussion, seated in front of room.
    2. Step 2
      1. Modify, with your partner, Slides 5-6.
      2. Be prepared for informal discussion, seated in front of room.
    3. Step 3
      1. Create the required supplemental Excel or Word documents.  See Section II above for details.  Rename the supplemental files starting with AP<your last name>.<extension>.
      2. Develop your Cost Effectiveness analysis by downloading and using the Excel worksheet, AppOMData.xls.
      3. Be prepared for informal discussion, seated in front of room.
    4. Step 4
      1. Modify, with your partner, Slides 7-9.
      2. Place a copy of your files in the course inbox located at S:\QueensProfessors\Lyons,Pat\Mgt3325\<class folder>\In for use during your presentation.
        Please note: you
cannot save directly from PowerPoint to the S: drive. You must save to another location (C: or H:) and then copy and paste the files to the S: drive.

      3. Give a 3-4 minute presentation to the class using the PC with each of you participating.  Constructive comments from the class are encouraged.

    5. Overall Requirements for All Steps
      1. Each student is to create a copy of the files on a flash drive. Both flash drives are to be brought to class (for backup).
      2. In PowerPoint, the font point size must be 20 or greater.
      3. Do not include copies of the supplemental files in your PowerPoint file, but display them directly when needed.
      4. Print your presentation with 6 slides to a page. To do this, use the File|Print... command, select the Handouts option in the PrintWhat menu, using 6 slides per page.
      5. Print two copies of all your files.  Submit one copy, and keep one copy for your reference.
      6. Submit your Comment Sheet, your presentation, supplemental file(s), Cost Effectiveness analysis, and the Career Exercise 2 Job Opportunity Summaries for both students (stapled together as one unit in sequential order).
      7. For any of the steps, late submission penalty is 20% of your Application of OM Presentation grade for each class late.

To help motivate the initial presentations, extra credit will be given to those who volunteer for a presentation.  Specifically, if you sign the Volunteer Sheet by Session #15 (Feb26) and give an appropriate Presentation when requested, you will receive a 30% extra credit for your Presentation grade.  This translates into three points on your final grade.  Please note that I wish to evenly distribute the presentation topics.  As a result, volunteers for the initial chapters will be assigned sequentially subject to supply and demand.  A Presentation Signup Sheet with a limited number of slots for each topic will be used.  Once all the slots for a given topic are filled, you must signup for another topic.

Concerning the schedule, the presentations will be done according to the class calendar as time permits.  If you are not asked to present on the date specified on the class calendar, you must be ready to present on any following class.  If you are not prepared (with your files and backups), your grade will be penalized 20% for each class not prepared.

Note for Factor Rating Method: Download and modify my Factor Rating workbook. Have at least one negative entry in each column of the Comparison Matrix.

If there is another topic other than those listed above that you wish to use, see me for approval.
