Career Exercise 3

Items

As discussed in the Chapter 2 lecture, the Strategy Development Process consists of:
        · Considering the threats and opportunities in the firm’s environment,
        · Considering the firm’s strengths and weaknesses, and
        · Then developing a strategy that matches the firm’s strengths with the opportunities, while avoiding the threats and weaknesses.
The purpose of this exercise is for you to determine specific information about the opportunities, threats, strengths, and weaknesses of the company offering the job you found in Career Exercise 2.

1. Visit the Google Business Directory located at http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/.  Google is widely used search engine, with a helpful system of directories.

2. Click on one of the Categories, such as Accounting, Advertising, Economics, Financial Services, Management or Marketing.  Then click some subcategories, scroll down, and follow a few webpages that interest you.  The purpose is to find general information about the industry in which you wish to work.  It is not necessary to print anything.  Spend at least five minutes.

3. Go back to the Google Business Directory located at http://directory.google.com/Top/Business/.  At the top of the page, input the name of the company offering the job you found in Career Exercise 2.  Then click the "Google Search" button.  Follow a few interesting links.  Spend at least five minutes.

4. Print one copy of at least two pages, but not more than four pages, of the most enlightening information that would be helpful to you in an interview.  On the reverse side of the first page, write the chain of links that you followed.  If you cannot find information about the company that you found in Career Exercise 2, you may use another similar company.

Note: you should develop your own Career Resources page of links, similar to the ones I created for Finance - www.patlyons.com/links/Finance.htm, Marketing - www.patlyons.com/links/Marketing.htm, and Biotechnology - www.patlyons.com/links/BioTech.htm.  You can use MS Word to create a document with functioning hyperlinks.

Requirements

Verbal: Be prepared to present your company information in class on or after the assigned date. Your class participation grade will be penalized 10% if you do not have written preparation.
